"There is no problem that He hasn’t known,
All of your heartaches He bore as His own.
In love they were taken, by death they were sealed,
Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal."
("Come to the Mercy Seat" written by Donnie and Marty Sumner / performed by Rick Busby)
Have you ever asked the question, "Why do bad things happen to God’s people?" Or maybe there have been times that you wondered if God really cared about you or the situation that you were going through. If you have ever asked such a question or have ever felt this way, then you just passed the test of finding out that you are an actual, living, breathing, human being. In other words, bad things don’t just happen to God’s people, but to everyone. Whether you are a Christian or not, at some point and time something bad or distressing is going to happen in your life. That was settled in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve disobeyed God. (Read Genesis chapter 3) If you are having a difficult time right now and need some encouragement, healing, and hope, then you have come to the right place. No matter what your situation is, there is hope for you. Maybe you have just gone through a divorce or your marriage is in trouble. Maybe you have just lost a loved one to death and you are asking why. Maybe you are going through or have already gone through a financial crisis or bankruptcy. Maybe you are having a problem with a particular addiction such as drugs, alcohol, pornography, etc. Whatever the problem or the situation is, I know someone who can take all of these things from you and restore joy and happiness to your life. That someone is Jesus Christ.
If you are already a Christian, a born-again child of God, then the following is for you.
"My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing." (James 1:2-4)
"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God." (II Corinthians 1:3-4)
As a born-again child of God, you are going to go through trials. However not all of these are "Job Trials", (trials allowed by God to test our faith in Him), but instead are simply trials or tribulations brought on by our own sin or disobedience to Him. As Christians we have Christ living in us, but the sinful nature of man is still there and Satan knows that. He cannot steal your salvation, but he can steal your joy and your witness for Christ. Satan is using what I have termed the "3D Effect" (DEATH, DIVORCE, and DEBT) in tearing down our churches and children of God. You see, Satan’s biggest tool in destroying the church of Jesus Christ is not the world, but it is the church itself. Churches are being torn apart because of these type of problems in the lives of Christians today. While there are many churches that are trying desperately to reach out to those who are hurting, there are still those churches who have shut their doors to problems such as these. In other words, they feel as though that our church members should be problem free. NO WORRIES, NO DOUBTS, NO FEARS, NO FAILURES, just constant mountain top experiences. Churches today MUST begin to face the fact that people are hurting. God’s people are hurting. There are worries, doubts, fears, and failures in the lives of God’s people, and until we finally come to that realization and meet it head on, Satan is just going to keep on using it against the church. That’s why Rick Busby Ministries exists today. For years I lived a defeated life thinking that God could never, and would never, use me again because of a divorce in my life. Although I had wonderful encouragement from many people, there were some who treated me as though I were a leper and unclean. I even had one Pastor ask me to leave his church because he found out that I had gone through a divorce. The churches policy was to never allow divorced people in their church. They viewed divorce as an unforgivable sin and they felt as though the presence of these people in the house of God would be a desecration to the holy temple of God. As I was being led out of the church by two of the deacons instructed to do so, one of them looked at me and said "God bless you, we’ll be praying for you." I can still remember his words and how his cigarette tainted breath filled the air. I honestly believe at that moment Satan thought he had won the victory, but it was that unpleasant experience that turned my life around. I knew God loved me. I knew Jesus died for me. I knew deep in my heart that He still had a job for me to do. Whether I pastored again or not was of no concern to me. I just wanted to know what He wanted me to do and I had to be willing to do it.
What are the results of the 3D Effect when Satan is in control?
When Death, Divorce, or Debt effects a Christian, Satan acts on it immediately. Without spiritual guidance and growth the 3D’s can produce the following negative results:
Doubts, Depression, Despair, Darkness, Distrust, Division, Dreariness, Disgrace, Distraction, Disaster, Destruction, Decay, Denial, Default, Danger, Deception, Spiritual Deafness, and Death. All of these can occur when a tragedy or unpleasant situation happens to a child of God. When we allow Satan to take control of the situation it just gets worse. Christians all over the world are being defeated because they just don’t know what to do or where to turn.
What should a Christian do when tragedy strikes?
The answer is simple
(1) Turn it over to God. He has the power to do anything. Because of Christ Jesus living in our hearts, we have the power to overcome any negative situation. The only reason we become defeated is because we allow it to happen. (Read II Corinthians 4:7-10)
(2) Read your Bible. Meditate upon the word of God. There is power in His word. (Read Romans 1:16 and II Timothy 2:15) God speaks to you through His word. That is why we have the Bible. You will be amazed at the great comfort and knowledge you will receive just by reading His word.
(3) Pray. Just as God speaks to you through His word, He listens to you when you talk to Him. He already knows your thoughts and He knows everything about you, so just be honest with Him and tell Him what you need. (Read Matthew 7:7-11) He really does care.
(4) Find a Church Home Hopefully you already have a good church home. If so, stay in there. Fellowshipping and worshiping with other like-minded Christians is very important. You need to stay involved in church and keep your thoughts and mind on the things of God. The more you are away from God’s people and the things of God, the bigger the opportunity for Satan to bring you down spiritually and emotionally. (Read Philippians 4:8-9)
(5) Seek Godly Counsel. I think too many times when people are going through a difficult time in their lives, they try to find opinions of other people who favor them and whenever they find someone who disagrees with them, they become angry and hurt. Never do this. It is important to seek Godly counsel. Talk to someone that is very strong in their walk with the Lord such as a Pastor, Christian Counselor, or just a lay person who has exhibited a close relationship with Christ and possibly has insight on a situation such as divorce, death, debt, depression, etc. Don’t seek out several opinions. The fewer, the better. Also, never go into a discussion with someone when all you are looking for is a pat on the back and a reason to continue feeling sorry for yourself. Someone who has the gift of Godly counsel will never just side with you, but will try to bring a solution to your problem through scripture and prayer, even if your current problem was caused by someone else.
(6) Finally, never give up on God. He never gave up on you. God has promised to never leave us or forsake us. (Read Deuteronomy 31:6) He will be with you through the valleys and on the mountaintops. You can always count on Him.
If you are not a Christian, what should you do when tragedy strikes?
Without Christ, you really have no hope. Sounds bad doesn’t it? However, it is true. The world can only give you a temporary fix. The only real and permanent solution is in Christ. When Christ is in your life you will have a constant friend and a constant source of help in time of need. Christians have problems too. The only difference is, is that a Christian will always have a source of help and a person without Christ has only man to depend on. Man will fail you, but Christ never can.
So what must you do? YOU and only YOU can make that decision. I can not wave a magic wand and suddenly you become a Christian. You have to decide in your heart that you need Him and that you can’t make it in this life without Him. How do you do that? It’s actually very simple.
How to be Saved
(1) You have to realize that you are a sinner. In other words, you must realize that you are not perfect and that you have done things that are not right in God’s eyes. (Read Romans 3:10 and Romans 3:23). We have all sinned. None of us are without sin. You must first realize this.
(2) Secondly, you must believe that Jesus is the Son of God. (Read I John 5:1 and John 3:16) You must believe this with your heart. You may not fully understand it, but by faith believe it.
(3) You must believe that Jesus died and rose again just for you. (Read Romans 10:9-10) Once again, you may not be able to understand it all right now, but you must be willing to accept it in your heart. You must believe that His death on the cross was not in vain, yet was done so that we all could have eternal life through Him. We are worthy of nothing but death and an eternity in Hell. Christ paid the penalty for our sins at Calvary. Because of that, we don’t have to suffer the eternal consequences of our sin. All He asks of us is that we accept what He did, believe Him, and give Him our life.
(4) You must be willing to give Him your life. He died for you, so the very least that we could is live for Him. Quit worrying about what you will have to give up when you decide to follow Him. You don’t have to worry about becoming a monk or a nun. When you accept Him, everything will begin to fall into place. Your desires will change. You will be amazed at what can happen when you trust Him.
(5) Finally, you just do it. If you are willing to have Christ in your life, the only thing left to do is to ask Him. If you would like to accept Christ, you can do that right now. It doesn’t matter that you are sitting at your computer reading this. You can accept Christ wherever you are. The following is a simple prayer you can pray if you truly want to become a child of God: "Dear Jesus, I’m a sinner. I can’t go on living my life like this. I’ve made a lot of mistakes and I am tired. I realize now that the world cannot solve my problems. I realize that you are my only hope. I believe that you died for me and that you rose again. I believe that you did all of this for me. I ask you now to forgive me of my sins, come into my heart and save me, and write my name down in the Lamb’s Book of Life. Now Lord, thank you for saving me and help me now as I turn all my problems over to you. IN JESUS NAME I PRAY, AMEN."
If you prayed that prayer, you just made the most important decision of your life. Now that you are a Christian, you now have access to the preceding steps given to those who are Christians and are having problems in their life.
