Biography. . .
“I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise shall continually
be in my mouth.” Psalm 34:1
If asked, Rick and Cyndi Busby will both tell you that they have been singing all their lives. Both had the privilege of being raised in Christian homes and have been singing songs about Jesus for as long as they can remember.
Rick, from Oil Trough, Arkansas, the youngest of four children, remembers telling his Sunday School Teacher when he was only seven years old, that when he grew up he was going to be a preacher and a singer. And that’s exactly what God had in store for him.
However, at such a young age, little did he know the valleys and the mountaintops that he would have to face in serving the Lord in this capacity.
Cyndi, from Augusta, Georgia, one of two daughters, has always had a love of music and loved to sing, but was terrified at the thought of singing in front of people. She has always been very shy and remembers hiding as a small child whenever anyone would visit her parents. Because of this fear, she expressed her musical ability by performing in the band throughout junior high and high school and singing with the Youth Choir in Church. But what she loved most was spending time in her room, singing along with Southern Gospel Groups such as The Hinson’s, The Goodman’s and the Rex Nelon Singers. She never dreamed that one day she would overcome this fear and be able to share with others the talent that God had given her. She also, could not know of the difficult times that would lie ahead for her.
Rick and Cyndi are no strangers to pain and tragedy. They have both experienced first-hand what it’s like when your world is falling apart.
In 1985, while pastoring a church in rural Arkansas, Rick’s wife, of just three years, informed him that she could no longer live the life of a pastor’s wife and that she had been unfaithful to him. She left with their two-year old son, Jonathan. Devastated and heartbroken, feeling as though God could never use him again in a pastoral position, Rick moved to Nashville, Tennessee to follow a different path.
The son of a Baptist preacher, Rick grew up singing the old hymns of the Church. Never did he dream that God would use his talent for singing to touch the lives of others, until he received a phone call one day in 1986 from his good friend Roger Bennett, of The Cathedrals, asking Rick to fill in for Danny Funderburk that night. Rick reluctantly accepted and was an instant hit with the gospel music fans. Little did Rick know that this one evening would change the course of his life. A short time later Rick received an invitation from Les Beasley, of the legendary Florida Boys, to become their new first tenor. Although Rick was no longer preaching, he was still able to deliver the same gospel message through songs, such as “When He Was On The Cross”, “Paid In Full”, “I Lean On You Lord”, and many others. Whether it was on the stage of the Grand Old Opry, or in a tiny country church, the message was always the same; “Jesus loves you, He died for you, and He’s coming again”.
In 1988, Rick felt the call to join Heaven Bound of Kinston, North Carolina. While their style was a little different, the message was still the same. Songs such as, “It’s The King”, “May He Touch You Now”, and “I Am With You Always”, continued to reach thousands of people all across America.
In the summer of 1989, while performing in Augusta, Georgia, group member Jeff Gibson introduced Rick to a beautiful young lady by the name of Cyndi Williford. In 1987, Cyndi’s husband, Bruce, a Deputy Sheriff, was shot and killed in the line of duty, leaving Cyndi and their two-year old son, Brandon, alone. Just as Rick had felt shunned and pitied after his divorce, Cyndi, too, had encountered some of the same experiences. It was obvious that the hand of God was in these two coming together. In January 1990, Rick and Cyndi were married and as Rick puts it, “I’m more in love with her every day”. One year later, Rick was blessed to be able to adopt Cyndi’s son, Brandon, and was overjoyed with the thought of having two sons.
In 1993, after having sung with Heaven Bound for five years, Rick decided to come off the road to spend some much needed time with his family. That same month, his son, Jonathan, came to be a permanent part of their lives.
Since that time, Rick has served as Associate Pastor of Second Baptist Church in Thomson, Georgia, and Westport Baptist Church in Denver, North Carolina. During this time, Rick was able to continue his education, receiving his Masters degree in Theology in June of 2000 and later earned his Doctorate in Theology in June of 2002.
In August of 2000, Rick felt strongly that God was leading Him into the field of evangelism. He began to travel nationwide, preaching and singing the gospel message that Jesus Christ is our hope for eternity. God began to pour out his Holy Spirit and His blessings in a powerful way. It was at that point, that the enemy attacked!
Rick began to suffer from a severe neurological disorder that completely left him disabled for 2 ½ years. Rick was no longer able to do the thing that he loved most; singing and preaching. Later it would be determined that he was suffering from what doctors believed to be Multiple Sclerosis.
While there were thousands of people praying for Rick, his condition seemed to only worsen. In December of 2004, Rick’s father, Rev. Lonnie Busby was dying of cancer. Rick flew home to see him one last time and before Rick left, his father said, “Son, before you go, I have something to tell you. Last night I was talking to the Lord and He told me that you were going to be healed real soon. You’re gonna’ be singing with Cyndi and preaching the gospel all over the country.” Rick says that was the last thing his dad said to him. Rev. Busby went to be with the Lord two and a half weeks later on January 10, 2005. On January 15, 2005, one day after his dad’s funeral, Rick was miraculously healed. Rick’s doctors, and those who are closest to him, can all attest to the incredible healing power of the Great Physician.
Ever since Rick’s marvelous healing, Cyndi has joined him full-time on the road singing and sharing her testimony of how God was gracious in giving her strength in some of the most difficult times of her life.
Besides Cyndi’s singing and speaking abilities, God has also gifted her with the talent to create some very unique Christian gift items. When Rick began the evangelistic ministry in the year 2000, Cyndi put her crafting talent to work and began creating Christian jewelry. Since that time she has designed and handcrafted thousands of angel pins and lapel pins which are to be worn as a reminder that no matter what we may be dealing with in our lives, God has promised that He will never leave us and is always with us.
Through their personal tragedies, they have found God to be true to His Word. More than anything, it is their desire to relay this message to the countless number of people experiencing hurts in their lives, whether lost or born again, so that they may be restored to live a fruitful and joy-filled life. Rick and Cyndi have co-authored a book, entitled “Shattered Lives, Broken Hearts, Restored”. It is their hope that this book can be used by others to help heal the hurts in their lives.
When asked how long Rick and Cyndi will continue in this ministry, they both had the same response: “As long as God continues to open the door to reach more people for Christ, we will go through it. There are a lot of hurting people out there, and we have a message to deliver. Satan knows that for those of us who know Christ, it is impossible to steal our salvation or our souls. Instead, he is working overtime to destroy our witness and our joy through problems that arise in our lives. Never before have I seen such Godly men, women and families being attacked as they are today. They need to hear the message that we serve the God of miracles. My family and I are living proof of that.”
